Two years, two suitcases. What would you bring?

We are hoping that this is the first of many posts we send out as we get closer and closer to starting our new adventure in Brazil this July. For any of you that this is news for, our whole family is moving to the capital city of Brasilia for two years where Sara and I will be teaching at, and the girls will be students at, the American School of Brasilia.

Obviously there are a few things involved in moving overseas for two years, arranging paperwork for four people to live and work in a foreign country (beyond complicated), packing up your entire house so someone can rent it (after 18 years of accumulating stuff), figuring out how to stay in touch with everyone who isn't coming with you (this is part of that), and then deciding what to bring with us (which is where we need help).

Long story shortened, there is an embargo by the airlines for passengers flying into Brazil of two checked bags per person, no exceptions, no amount of money can buy a third bag.  Our plan was three to four bags each, so this is quite a change for us.  We have looked into shipping things by air cargo, but it is insanely expensive, complicated, and most people recommend that we don't even try it because sometimes your stuff just disappears and there is nothing you can do about it.

So, we are trying to condense our lives into two checked bags and one carry on for each of us.  We are moving into a fully furnished apartment, but are still trying to figure out what to bring.

Any ideas?
